On a still, gray day in Boothbay Harbor, one lobster boat rides at its mooring, its bow pointed our way. The water is so calm that its reflection lies long and clear below it.
Small buoys dot the harbor in red, yellow and green, marking the traps below. In Maine, each lobsterman’s buoy colors are kept on file with the state, and the same colors must be shown on the boat itself. That is why a red buoy hangs on this boat’s cabin.
A red-and-white buoy floats in the foreground. On the far shore stands Burnt Island Light, which has marked the entrance to Boothbay Harbor since 1821. Its thirty-foot tower is granite lined with brick, and a covered walkway joins it to the keeper’s house among the dark trees.
Nothing is moving. The traps are down, and the boat waits for the day’s work.
